Project Summary

In 2013, Merrist Wood College successfully obtained planning consent to redevelop their existing Animal Management unit into a state-of-the-art centre, comprising of 2 specialist biome spaces. One space mimicking the environment of a desert and the other tropical, along with a nocturnal room, general teaching spaces and rooms to help facilitate the welfare of the animals.

The building was designed by Pick Everard Architects to house exotic animals that have conservation importance, the site itself had its own ecological interest as Great Crested Newts were found during surveys, this became a brilliant teaching resource for some students studying at the Land Based College

The vision for the new centre which opened in 2016 was to obtain a Zoo License from the Local Authority and be able to open its doors and showcase their animal collection to the public, this was achieved in 2018
